TALKS
Antarctica - The Journey of a Lifetime
Let Dean describe to you his journey to the world's coldest, driest and windiest continent.
A Journey from Camera to Screen
Would you like to put your photographs, slides and negatives onto a DVD for all the family to watch?
Let Dean and Norma explain how to do it.
This is NOT a technical talk. You will see examples of weddings, family history, the life of a pet and much more.
Bring those images to life with music, special effects and text. Don't let them lie unseen in albums and shoe boxes in the wardrobe. This talk will inspire you to do something special with your family memories.
1950's - A Nostalgic Journey
Take a stroll down memory land with us. Was it all better in the olden days. . . or do we simply look at the past with 'rose-tinted spectacles'?
Music, fashion, cinema. Was it the best ever decade?
Every Night Something Awful - ENSA and our War-Time Entertainers
A talk looking at how ENSA and other war-time organisations raised our morale in the dark years of 1939-1945.
ENSA was the world's largest ever entertainment organisation that included Gracie Fields, George Formby, Tommy Trinder, Noel Coward and Joyce Grenfell to name but a few.
As Churchill said to ENSA performers: "Your job is to sing while the guns are blazing."
It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year - Oh Yes it is!'
The talk looks at our 2000 year-old journey from a babe in a manger to baubles on a tree. How did we manage that?
En-route (besides giving Santa a sherry and the reindeer carrots) we will stop to look at who decided on 25th December? Where did Santa Claus come from and his crucial role in other countries? Why do we sing Christmas carols? Are there 8 or 9 reindeer? Also, it would be remiss not to take a peep at Victorian cards with their scantily-clad females and groups of dancing frogs.
All demand more than a cursory examination at this crucial time of the year.
Oh! Did I mention the Christmas quiz? No quill or ink required.
Charles Dickens and our Christmas Traditions
Christmas, before the publication of 'A Christmas Carol' in 1843 was very different from the Christmas we celebrate today.
How could such a slim novel have such a big effect?
How much of our Chritmas today do we owe to Charles Dickens?
Gift giving, family celebrations, Santa Claus. Did they all come from the quill of Charles Dickens?
Get your members in the Christmas mood with this seasonal talk.
Let us not forget the Christmas quiz to end the evening. No quill or ink required.
P.S. Christmas jumpers encouraged but not compulsory.
